CollegeHumor becomes Dropout

As Director of Social Programming, I led social media strategy and content direction for the launch of Dropout, CollegeHumor's SVOD platform. That involved directing copy across all social handles for multiple brands, with the goal of keeping a passionate, opinionated audience bought in during a major transition from free content to subscription. After launching the platform, I planned and executed launch campaigns for three new series per quarter, including fan favorites like Dimension 20, WTF 101, Um Actually, and Total Forgiveness.

BY THE NUMBERS: Drove 100k paid subscribers and 350k new social fans in Dropout's first year.

CollegeHumor Originals

As the internet became a social-first environment where brands were forced to engage audiences through the newsfeed, I headed up social packaging for CollegeHumor's image, link, and video content. In particular, I led the effort to "letterbox" our videos – baking the titles and captions into each one, as seen in the examples above. I wrote titles, descriptions, and oversaw design and thumbnail selection, constantly A/B testing to make sure our entire library was eye-catching and scroll-stopping as it was being built. I optimized three new releases per week, as well as our ten-year back catalogue of classic series like Hardly Working, Jake and Amir, Prank War, Dorkly Bits, and more. This method proved to be the Mentos in the Diet Coke of Facebook growth, gaining millions of new followers and laying the groundwork for the successful launch of Dropout.

BY THE NUMBERS: Hundreds of millions of video views; CollegeHumor's Facebook following grew from 5.5 to 9.5 million, while Dorkly's doubled from 1.5 to 3 million.

CollegeHumor on TV

CollegeHumor was regularly tapped by streaming and social platforms to make original content, and I led efforts to package and promote series for Facebook Watch, YouTube Red, Comcast Watchable, Nintendo Video, and more. But two stand-outs began as CollegeHumor Originals and were picked up by network TV: Adam Ruins Everything (truTV) and Hot Date (Pop TV). I oversaw the letterbox process on these campaigns as well, writing title and description copy and overseeing design and thumbnail selection. I also managed promotional rollout for each episode, this time coordinating with networks, agencies, and talent on voice, tone, and scheduling.

Branded Content

I collaborated on social titles, descriptions, and CTA for branded content campaigns, combining my extensive experience in ad operations, editorial, and marketing to deliver the client's message while preserving the CollegeHumor voice enough to drive views into the millions. I worked with brands, agencies, design, post-production, and editorial to write copy, then provided performance reporting to close the loop. Clients included MillerCoors, Vita Coco, NHTSA, Universal, National Geographic, Prime Video, and Comcast.

Honest Ads

Cracked's fan-favorite ad parody series has been running for over a decade. I served as Head Writer from 2023–2024, recruiting an all-star writers room, selecting topics and doing preliminary research, editing scripts, sourcing and creating props, and appearing on screen when needed. This playlist features six episodes I wrote solo.

CanonBall

A pop-culture deep-dive series I developed in 2021 that now has over 50 episodes and a Snapchat Discover channel. I researched, wrote, and edited the pilot episode as a clip-centric voiceover video, and from there it morphed into a talking head-style series with its own permanent set. Playlist features 18 of my favorite episodes.

Honest History

We set out to develop a spin-off of Honest Ads that would open us up to more topics, and my pilot for a history deep-dive — with a charismatic host stuck in a dimensional anomaly where time doesn't exist — was picked up for a ten-episode run. I recruited a writers room, researched and selected topics, then guided the scripting process up through shoot day.

PictoFacts: The Game Show

An image-based trivia competition with social sharing and home-grown comedic talent built into its DNA. Every prompt was designed to be easily translated to social media, and I made quiz-style images, GIFs, and video clips to engage our fact- and clout-hungry audience. Playlist features the three-episode pilot.

Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre

I wrote and produced parody, award show, and game show sketches for UCB's house sketch team.

I've designed thumbnails for brands like CollegeHumor, Dropout, Dorkly, and Cracked, both for editorial content and branded campaigns. These images were designed for owned-and-operated sites, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter — often, they had to be versioned for all of these at the same time.

Photoshop

I created dozens of comedic image series for CollegeHumor and Dorkly, collaborating with editorial staff and often writing them myself. I often had to learn and execute new design and illustration styles with a quick-turnaround and high volume.
